Looking for a great place to go surfing? Smiths Beach, Phillip Island is a perfect spot for surfers of all levels. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced surfer this is the place to be. For those not into surfing the 1km long beach is a lovely place to watch the surfers ride the waves, fly a kite or simply play in the sand or relax reading a book. Even on a windy, dark cloudy day and rain is threatening, it’s still a fun place to be. A beach that attracts many on a summers day.

Is it safe to swim?
Whilst the signs advise swimming is not allowed people do still swim here. The beach is known for its strong rips and currents. During summer, the beach is patrolled by lifesavers. If the yellow and red lifesaver flags are not out the beach is not being manned. The lifesavers will be on guard on weekends and public holidays from the last weekend in November to Easter Monday. Daily between the 26th December to 26th January. If you do venture in for a swim ensure you swim when the beach is manned and stay between the flags.

Access to the beach
From the spacious car park you can take either the stairs or there is a wooden ramp which leads you to the sandy beach. This is suitable for prams or wheelchairs to reach the sand. From the ramp and stairs you get lovely views looking down onto the beach, your eye stretching along the scenic Bass Coast. On our visit there were numerous groups grabbing a surf, flying kites or just sitting on the beach. Others exploring the rock pools.
