Little River Falls, Wulgulmerang East, Victoria

June 24, 2021

Driving from Buchan Reserve to McKillops Bridge Little River Falls is one of the first destinations we stopped to explore. With our maps in hand that we acquired from the Buchan Reserve information kiosk we were excitedly on our way. The countryside is extremely mountainous and beautiful. If you are prone to car sickness I would suggest investing in motion sickness tablets. With the windy roads the journey to McKillops Bridge and beyond is a slow one. Take your time and ensure you allow plenty of time if your journey is going beyond the Little River Falls.

Once we reached the car park it was a short walk to reach the Little River Falls. There are two carparks situated either side of the Little River bridge.

The lookout point looks down on the falls and offers views of the surrounding forest. Without a good camera it is difficult to grab a great photo. It is still worth the walk, for us this trip wasn’t about the destination but about the journey. It was a lovely short walk which we crossed the Little River to commence our walk to the falls.

Walking along the tracks goannas could be seen climbing the nearby trees. The rustle in the bushland on a sunny day was enough to make us jump a mile. Yes, we were on the lookout for snakes.

What are the roads like?

Depending what vehicle you are in ensure you read up on the roads before embarking on your journey around the Snowy Mountains. The roads further than Little River Gorge are not suitable for large cars and caravans. The road in one area is extremely narrow, although it is two ways, it’s equivalent to one lane. In busy periods you may be required to reverse within an 11km stretch on this very windy, dirt road which hugs the cliff side. It’s a mighty long way down.
