Home to what has fast become a tourist destination, Jimmy DVate’s silo artwork of the Sugar Glider and Azure Kingfisher is the small country town of Victoria. In 1904 the town became famous as it was the birthplace of Australian racing and endurance cyclist Sir Hubert Opperman. The town has dedicated a museum to Sir Hubert Opperman. Strolling around the town you can also look out for the statue of him winning the Bol D’Or race in 1928 in Paris.
A town which the picturesque Campaspe river flows through is a delightful town to explore. The gateway to the Murray Region of Victoria. Named after Dr John Pearson Rowe who had a hotel in Rochester back in 1855.
Our Experience
We’ve visited Rochester a couple of times, each time we stroll the streets and admire the old buildings. Our main purpose to visit Rochester is to see the brilliant artwork by Jimmy DVate who created an amazing silo artwork in 2018. The artwork is an easy stroll from the town. We also enjoyed checking out Liddles Lane. On our visit a market was on, so of course we had to grab a bag of yummy jam donuts. Unfortunately on this occasion we didn’t have time to explore along the Campaspe River which offers great photo opportunities for photographers.

Things to see in Rochester
For a small country town there’s a few things to see. From a Sports Museum, Liddles Lane, Rochester Silo Art, strolling the town checking out the old buildings or looking at the mural on the Northern Highway. You could easily spend a couple of hours here. We are still to visit the Sports Museum and have a proper look at the mural on the Northern Highway. Another reason to stop on our next country road trip.
Liddles Lane
If you love artwork, don’t forget to stop and take a stroll down Liddles Lane to see a different type of artwork. Here you’ll find a mural honoring the former homicide detective Ron Iddles. Ron Iddles was part of the unveiling the mural capturing his life. Born in Rochester and left at the age of 16 to head to Melbourne to become a police officer.
