Driving along the unsealed road, The Boulevard in Summerlands offers panoramic views of Bass Strait. There are a few lookouts which provide breathtaking views along the coast. The Summerlands lookout provides a birds eye view of the famous Summerland Beach where thousands of tourists flock to watch the Penguin Parade at dusk.
From the lookout you can clearly see the viewing area. A place where I have fond memories visiting as a child. A time when the beach was cordoned off with ropes, people sat huddled up under blankets to keep warm. The cute little penguins would waddle up the beach to find their young waiting for them. You could follow them down the path and watch them find their burrows. Some would fall in the tourists footprints in the sand. These days there’s a huge grandstand which draws the crowds. Prior to Covid-19 tourists would come from all over the world to witness the penguins make their journey from the ocean to their burrows.
Looking down onto Summerland Beach it’s very hard not to spare a thought to the thousands of penguins that battle the rough seas in search of fish for their young. To this day it still baffles me how they are out at sea for.
Enjoy listening to the sound of the waves as you sit and gaze out to sea. During whale season don’t forget to bring your binoculars and look for Whales. Near the lookout you will find an information about Whales.
